MRS. KATY Y. WALLER
Katy Y. Waller of Inverness, IL, and formerly of Clearwater, FL, passed away on Tuesday, February 7th in Inverness. She was born on December 20, 1919 in Japan. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Binion C. Waller, Jr., and is survived by her daughter, Mutsuko (Nancy) Sheehan (Terry), and her two grandsons, Darren and Brian, as well as her brothers, nephews and nieces in Japan.
Katy received her education in Japan and Taiwan and served as an elementary school teacher for four years in Japan. After World War II, she married an American and became an American citizen in 1958. Upon her husband's retirement with the U.S. Government, they settled in Tampa, FL during June, 1972.
Katy was very active in Japanese arts. She taught Bankei, Bonseki and flower arrangement to a large number of Americans and Japanese, as well as putting on demonstrations for numerous organizations in Japan and Florida. Many of her students were wives of diplomatic and military personnel of the U.S. Government and the government of Japan. She was active in numerous women's and international clubs.
Katy held a professor's certificate in Bankei from the Bankei Sansai School in Tokyo, a professor's certificate in Bonseki from the Bonseki Hosokawa Ryu School, Tokyo, and Bonseki Shuho Ryu School in Yamaguchi Prefecture, as well as an Assistant Professor's certificate from the Ikenobo College in Kyoto for flower arrangement. Katy was an active member of Ikebana International, and was on the Board of the Okinawa Chapter from 1965 to 1968.
